How we compare to other Texas defensive driving providers
Texas has dozens of TDLR-licensed defensive driving providers and most of them work. The differences come down to pricing transparency, the modern feel of the course, and how seriously the provider takes integrity controls. Here's where we stand — including where we don't yet stack up.
| Feature | DefensiveDrivingPlus (us) | Larger national chains | Older / discount providers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Total cost (typical student) | $25 (statutory minimum) | $25–$45 (depending on add-ons) | $25 (sometimes plus mandatory add-ons) |
| Base course fee | $25 | $25 | $25 |

| Final exam | 25 questions, 70% to pass, no time limit | Varies by provider | Varies; some have very lenient retake policies |
| Identity verification | Robust | Basic | Minimal |
| TDLR licensing | Application in progress (sample-only certificates today) | TDLR-licensed | TDLR-licensed |
| Support response | Email; replies within 1 business day | Phone + chat; varies | Email; multi-day response common |
| Honest takeaway | Modern flow, transparent about pre-license posture, statutory-minimum pricing, robust audit trail for chargeback evidence. | TDLR-licensed and live today. Add-ons can push the total well above the $25 floor; read the cart carefully before paying. | Cheap and licensed, but the experience often shows its age. UI from a previous era; some have weaker identity controls. |
Where we don't yet stack up
Until TDLR issues our provider license, our certificates are sample-only and not accepted by Texas courts. If you have a court deadline today, take a course from a TDLR-licensed provider — full stop. We'll be ready the next time you (or someone you know) gets a ticket.

The differences that matter
Most providers are functional but stuck in a previous web era. Here's where we put the work.
Statutory minimum pricing
Texas Education Code sets a minimum $25 student fee. We charge exactly $25 — we don't bundle mandatory upcharges to inflate the total.
Mobile-first course player
Built for phones first; resume on any device. Works in any modern browser; nothing to install.
Server-side seat-time enforcement
Per-section minimum-time gates run on the server. Students can't skip past the statutory 6-hour requirement.
Identity verification at module starts
Identity-challenge questions established at enrollment, re-prompted at module starts and before the final exam.
Append-only audit log
Every section view, time-gate completion, formative quiz, exam attempt, and login is logged with IP and user-agent — for TDLR audits AND for chargeback evidence.
Final exam from a 100+ item bank
25-question summative drawn from a balanced item bank covering all 10 modules. 70% to pass.
Honest about pre-license status
Until TDLR formally issues our provider license, every certificate we generate is clearly marked sample-only. We won't pretend otherwise.
About this comparison
We compared providers based on publicly available information from their websites, the TDLR provider directory, and our own use of competitor flows. Provider categories are generalized — individual TDLR-licensed providers within a category vary. We've avoided naming specific competitors because the goal is honest framing, not bashing.
