Type 3 vs Type 3A in Texas

The content is identical. The difference is the DPS seal — and the seal is the whole point.

Type 3 and Type 3A list exactly the same information: every crash and every conviction on file with Texas DPS. The only difference is whether the document is certified — signed by the DPS custodian and bearing the raised seal that makes it admissible in court.

Common pitfalls

Where drivers get tripped up

  • People assume the cheaper Type 3 is 'good enough' and discover the certification matters when a clerk rejects it.

  • Type 3 is delivered electronically; Type 3A has to be physically printed, signed, and mailed.

  • If you only need to read your own history, Type 3 is fine and a lot faster.

What's actually different

  • Type 3 — Complete record, uncertified. Same fields as 3A but no signature, no seal. Usually downloadable immediately.
  • Type 3A — Same record, with DPS certification. Mailed (or in some cases delivered as a signed PDF). Court-admissible.

How to think about it

Type 3 is the reading copy. Type 3A is the courtroom copy. If nobody needs to authenticate the document, you don't need 3A.

Decision flowchart

  1. 1

Is anyone besides me going to use this?

If no — it's for your own review — Type 3 is the right choice. Cheap, instant, complete.

  2. 2

Does the recipient need to authenticate it?

If yes — court, judge, formal HR file, regulatory filing — you need Type 3A. The seal is what they're verifying.

  3. 3

    Did the recipient say 'certified'?

If yes — Type 3A. Always. There is no other interpretation of 'certified' in the DPS record context.
